It was founded as a band of dark metal of the city of San Jose de Cucuta, formed in the year of 2002 by Alex Mora 'Renny' (guitars), George Cáceres 'The Mono' (bass and vocals) and Carlitos Madariaga (drums), strongly inspired by the theme of the crusades and the dark side behind these 'Holy campaigns of war and invasion' towards the east.

The name 'Megatherium', is due to the discoveries made by the paleontologist Self-taught 'Don Sadi' in the Corregimiento de los Vados (LP-NdS), where among other things this great lord found himself nailed in a estoraque the lower jaw fossilized a Megaterio or Megatherium the Pleistocene, that was a beast of great size characterized by its passivity because it is an ancestor of the lazy, but that it also had some large claws that it served as a defense, by which he was respected by the other animals of that time. Also "Don Sadi" helped a natural elixir to which called 'Agua de Rocas (Water?s Rocks)' manages that his listeners to provide all the attention as if they were in trance?

The band with the time suffered changes in its original alignment incorporating Diego Barajas in the bass and Julian Correa 'El Paisa' who initially concentrated himself in the rhythmic guitars, to then go to the vocals part.

Megatherium without a doubt was one of the pioneering bands in the Extreme Metal Movement of Cucuta, Colombia, influencing many trends that today are being developed. Currently the band has taken a turn in its music and has been dedicated to experiment with new sounds, instruments and others, breaking the borders that tend to be the musical genres and that enclose in many cases to the traditional bands, therefore Megatherium considers itself as experimental Metal, its lyrics always go in hand of the consciousness, of the hand of the people and of the struggling class, using music as a tool for social transformation, cultural and ideological.
